Queen Sea Big Shark – Beijing’s own superstar indie glamrock band

Around two months ago I had the pleasure of discovering what could be one of Beijing’s best bands out there. They go by the name Queen Sea Big Shark, very unique, no? With notable influences such as the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Franz Ferdinand, and any other bands out there from the 1980s rock scene in New York City. Queen Sea Big Shark gives us a very tasteful new wave and dance rock sound.

They formed in 2005 on Beijing, with members Fu Han (vocals), Cao Pu (guitar), Wang Jinghan (bass), and Xiau Wu (drums). But it wasn’t until 2007 when they released their major eponymous debut album. Followed by their sophomore album in 2010 titled “Wave”. So how did the band come up with their name? The vocalist Fu Han said; “One day we walked around Queensea Lake in Beijing, we saw a sign that read ‘This is mine, don’t even touch it, I’m queen sea big shark,’ then we thought, ‘Wow! That’s cool. Let’s take it“, definitely amazing when you just happen to bump onto your future band’s name, right?

Nonetheless, Queen Sea Big Shark definitely rocks the music scene in China, check out their music video for “Let’s Play” below! A special collaboration with Converse China.

capsule to postpone new album “KILLER WAVE”

capsule‘s new album “KILLER WAVE” which was set to be released on March 23rd of this year has been postponed indefinitely. After the tragic incidents in Japan, capsule felt like postponing the album. Could it be because of the title?

However, the capsule fanbase has been very supportive of the decision. Yes, it makes us all very sad, but at the same time we’re glad that Toshiko Koshijima and Nakata Yasutaka are safe. The album will still be highly anticipated by everyone!

Miu Sakamoto discovers a new world

Japanese musician Miu Sakamoto released her sixth album titled “Phantom Girl” in May of 2010. After a two year absence since her last album “Zoy“. This time, daughter of legendary musician, teamed up with Chinese-American indie producer Dave Liang. Who is very well known for being the mastermind behind The Shanghai Restoration Project.

“Phantom Girl” captures the essence of ethnic Chinese music bringing it a experimental electronic pop twist. Similar to that of Dave Liang’s own work. However, by incorporating Miu Sakamoto’s beautiful lyrics and fabulous voice gives it a great turnout. An absolutely fantastic collaboration.

The leading track of “Phantom Girl” titled “Phantom Girl’s First Love” was used to promote the album, along “Silent Fiction“. “Phantom Girl’s First Love” is a very cheerful yet chill track, giving great promotion to the album by showing the listeners a taste of what to find. It’s music video is visually stunning, captured magnificently with bright sunlight-like colors. Also while adapting a modified version of a Chinese-style dragon, using it as a mascot or pet, also present in the album cover and most promotional photos. The album sure gives us a truly unique experience in music as it is.

It was also recently revealed via Twitter by Dave Liang himself, that he was in the recording studio working once again with Miu Sakamoto. Does this mean this fantastic collaboration will team up once more release a new album? I sure hope so! “Phantom Girl” surely is one of 2010’s top favorites, a pure underrated gem.

Taiwan’s Waa stuns listeners with her new album

Taiwanese indie pop singer Waa Wei (full name Wei Ru Xuan, and simply known as Waa), who debuted in 2008 with her first album, released her second album titled “優雅的刺蝟 (Elegant Prick)” in mid 2010. Leading with the single “困在 (Trapped In)“. Unlike her first album, this one goes even deeper on a whole new level. Experimenting with various genres such as ambient, pop, jazz, dream pop, electronica, lounge and even folk. While her fanbase may not be huge, she still captures the hearts of many.

Reminding me a more modern, sharpened, and light Björk, Waa amazes me with her perfectly produced album. “困在 (Trapped In)” which is composed by Maximilian Hecker and lyrics written by Qing Feng from Sodagreen captures big emotion onto the song. Bringing us a very beautiful electronic-pop ballad, capturing a relaxing atmosphere.

Waa also worked with Chinese indie pop duo Carrchy, on the fourth track of the album titled “沒有關係 (Does Not Matter)“. The song is composed by Fly from Carrchy while the lyrics are written by Waa herself. Another favorite from the album, bringing us a very simple, cheerful, and lovely melody. The album is truly the best for chill-out music, fits any relaxing atmosphere perfectly, giving us a café-like feel.

Before going solo she was part of indie pop duo Natural Q, along with musician Jige. Releasing two albums before leaving for unknown reasons. Now Jige adapted Natural Q as his own stagename, and became a solo act releasing a third album. Waa is also a DJ on Taiwanese radio station “BCC i radio FM96” serving as the host for the show “I-Happy“. Waa has surely surprised many with her uncanny talents. An amazing voice, great looks, and charming charisma. Waa definitely brings us great quality music.

Check out the music video for “困在 (Trapped In)” below!
